Mission StatementAs parents and educators, we are working together to promote respectful, responsible, Christ-like citizens who promote Catholic values and high academic standards. PhilosophySt. Mathias Catholic School has as its primary goal a three-fold purpose of Christian education.
St. Mathias Catholic School History: A TraditionSt. Mathias Catholic School is part of a very unique heritage. This school not only came into existence because parents wanted their children to be taught the Catholic faith, but it was a dream of a few early settlers to provide for future generations a Catholic education which would prepare our children to be the "Makers of America". The barn that had been purchased with the Doffing house by Rev. Schlinkert in 1905 was converted into a Catholic School and was completed on November 12. 1918. The school was staffed by the School Sisters of Notre Dame with twenty-nine students enrolled. The school grew very rapidly and it was evident by 1924 that there was a need for a larger school. The new school was built and completed in 1925. It was a three story structure with four classrooms and room for the convent. There were 105 students in 1925 and it was used as a Catholic School until 1951. After the sisters left in 1950, the school remained a Catholic School until 1951. In 1951, St. Mathias School was operated as a public school called District 107. With the return of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, a new convent was built in 1961, and the school was again staffed and operated as a Catholic School. From 1961 until present, St. Mathias Catholic School has significantly influenced the City of Hampton and surrounding areas by preparing its students with an excellent Catholic education. |
